November 21, 2012 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The End of an Era approaches for Grace L. Smocking Supplies After over 80 years in business, Canada’s ‘Grand Old Lady of Smocking’ is hanging up her apron. Now being operated by the third generation of family owners, Grace’s grandson George Webb has made the difficult decision to retire. Grace L. Knott Smocking Supplies Ltd. was founded by its namesake, Grace Knott, around 1930. Grace started her "School of English Smocking" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada after arriving in Canada from England as a World War One 'war bride'. From the late 1920s until the early 1970s Grace taught many thousands of women the art of English Smocking in Canada. Grace authored two books, designed and had printed dress patterns, designs and smocking dots ‘Knott’s Dots’. After Grace passed away in 1976 the smocking business continued to flourish under the direction of Grace's daughter-in-law, Doris Webb. Grace’s grandson George Webb joined the business in 1980 and has to this day continued operating and expanding the business. By employing the unique talents of designer Judith Marquis and the graphic artistry of George’s brother Jim, new patterns and books and a creative website followed. In 2003, heirloom sewing products such as lace and fine fabrics were added to the smocking supplies. Sadly, interest in fine needlework and sewing has been in decline over the past decade and unfortunately Grace L. Knott Smocking is not immune to this consumer trend. So it is time to say good-bye to this cherished little company. However, before the door finally closes there is product to sell off. From the company’s famous ‘Knott’s Dots’, books, patterns, designs, Read smocking gathering machines, the list goes on!
